What’s happening ?
“I’ve been tracking electrical disorder manifestations attaching its debris to my body and pulling them in a counter-direction to that with which society evolves.” Rym Hayouni
The artist, using chains and hooks roams the streets in search of debris. Once the post-consumer object has been encountered, the artist chains it to her feet. Throughout her journey, discarded phones, the remains of a fan or the carcass of an old computer are accumulated and dragged behind her creating a loud ‘modern-waste’ sound.
Walk , collect and tie are the main steps that the artist performed throughout many miles. The happenings was about the act of repeating the gestures, accumulating found objects and dragging them adding their volume to her’s : I almost feel that Rym Hayouni already made these objects an extension of her body.
Public reaction
What is happening? What does she mean? why inflict this penalty on oneself? The artist’s passage does not leave the public indifferent. The young artist chained to metallic and electronic debris that she drags with her on her walk turns many heads, raising many questions and eliciting different reactions from an audience unfamiliar with the art of performance. Curious to see and understand this ‘surrealist’ show , the passengers did not hesitate to stop, stare, ask, and sometimes even follow the artist in her walk.
Finally, I do recognize in this work the physical and moral strength, that of venturing into alleys for hours and openly putting the body into play in this daring experience. And if i have to choose words to describe it, it would definetly be, bold and impactful.
