ARTFORMS

Sculpture.

MATERIALS/MEDIA

Discarded objects, computer waste, aerosol cans, spray bottles, toothbrushes,..

GUIDING INTEREST

Takadiwa creates large-scale sculptural pieces from ordinarily discarded materials, including everything from computer waste, aerosol cans and spray bottles, to toothbrushes and toothpaste tubes. He weaves together these small everyday objects to make impressive organic forms evocative of jewel-encrusted excess. The artist’s choice of materials communicates his concern with issues around consumerism, inequality, post-colonialism and the environment.

Working with local upcoming young artists and young creatives, Takadiwa aims to create the world’s first arts district made of reused and repurposed materials.

QUOTE

As result, every time I see my work, it reflects to me something of that community and gives me memories of my people. My work often tells a story, for example, Smell of Foreign Policy, which is made out of gold perfume bottle tops tells a tale of my people importing vanity items while we are passing through difficult times. Perhaps we are trying to obscure the smell left in our cities by the uncollected garbage and sewage, perhaps we are seeking comfort from these items of relative luxury (In conversation with Moffat Takadiwa by Olivier Enwonwu from omenkaonline.com )
