The Internet is a fluffy cloud: On metaphors and the materiality of the World Wide Web
Event | Talk
Talk + Q&A with Katrin Fritsch from the Motif Institute
When we think about the Internet, we often imagine it as an interconnected blue cloud – a space that is above us, not questionable and not tangible. The materiality of the biggest infrastructure of our times is often forgotten: the cables underneath the sea, the routers in our rooms, the rare earth elements in our phones, the servers in remote landscapes. In this talk, Katrin will discuss current metaphors of the Internet and how they affect our understanding and use of this technology. She will critique how these metaphors obfuscate our approach to data and digital human rights.
